CAMRAN NEZHAT, MD, FACOG, FACS,

Camran Nezhat, M.D. has been called the father of modern-day operative laparoscopy for pioneering the technique of operating off the video monitor and video-assisted endoscopy, which revolutionized surgery;1-8 and for performing some of the most advanced surgical procedures laparoscopically for the first time.1-53 By doing so, he opened the path and the landscape for surgeons all over the world to help their patient.1-53  He also advocated 5,9 and proved that the majority of the procedures that at the time were performed by open surgery can be converted to minimally invasive ones.1-53 Early on he declared that wherever in the body a cavity exists or can be created minimally invasive surgery is possible and probably preferable, the limiting factor is skill and experience of the surgeon and availability of proper instrumentations.5,9

Camran Nezhat, M.D. collaborated with robotic pioneers, Ajit Shah and Phil Green, in the 1990’s, for the development of the da Vinci Robot46 and reported its many uses.10, 44-49

Following his pioneering techniques of video assisted endoscopy; some of the procedures Camran Nezhat, M.D. and his collaborators have been credited with performing for the first time in surgical history include:

GYNECOLOGY

  • Laparoscopic treatment of extensive endometriosis involving multiple organs 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 4-9, 12, 24-32

Camran Nezhat, M.D. along with his brother Farr Nezhat, M.D. and their team also proposed a new classification for ovarian endometriomas, based on the pathological findings.43

These were all among some of the procedures performed laparoscopically or theories proposed, for the first time, by Camran Nezhat, M.D. and his team, including Farr Nezhat, M.D. and Ceana Nezhat, M.D. The above pioneering work along with his other innovations, in different arenas like vessel sealing cutting devices, suction irrigation, lasers, safe abdominal entry, robotics, etc., serve millions of patients around the world.

He is author of eight textbooks and several hundred peer reviewed articles and book chapters. He has trained many physicians, who have become pillars of their communities, internationally. He started teaching post-graduate courses in 1982 and to this date, he continues to teach and share his knowledge with medical professionals all over the world. He has had teaching and leadership roles at different societies and universities, as President, Honorary President, Visiting Professor, Clinical Professor, and Adjunct Clinical Professor.

He is the recipient of numerous awards from some of the most prestigious societies like American College of Surgeons, American College of OBGYN, American Society of Reproductive Medicine, Society Laparoendoscopy Surgeon, etc. His most recent award is “Distinguished Surgeon Award” from Society of Reproductive Surgeons of ASRM, in 2015. Camran Nezhat, M.D. also was awarded to be the first surgeon to be part of “Drs. Camran, Farr, and Ceana Nezhat Live Telesurgery Forum,” which was inaugurated at the Annual Clinical Meeting of ACOG in May 2015, in San Francisco, California.

In 2014, Camran Nezhat, M.D., in collaboration with Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, started the first “Endometriosis Specialist” Subspecialty in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Fellowship, as a multidisciplinary approach.

He is the Founder of Worldwide Endometriosis March (EndoMarch), a global grassroots movement with the mission of raising awareness about endometriosis and finding, in 1994, noninvasive diagnostic testing, and ultimately, prevention and treatment (www.endomarch.org). More than sixty countries are members of this movement.

He has been involved in research, teaching, innovating and philanthropic activities while in private practice all of his professional life. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bipolar surgical instruments having focused electrical fields

Publication number: 20030125728
Abstract: A bipolar surgical device comprises a pair of actuable jaws. A first electrode member which optionally includes a line of electrically coupled tissue-penetrating elements is formed on one of the jaws, and a second electrode member which optionally includes a line of electrically coupled tissue-penetrating elements is formed on the same or the other jaw. The electrode members are laterally spaced-apart and arranged in a parallel, usually linear manner so that the lateral distance therebetween remains generally constant. In operation, tissue may be grasped between the jaws so that the electrode members contact and/or the tissue-penetrating elements enter into the tissue. By energizing the electrode members at opposite polarities using a high frequency energy source, tissue between the jaws will be heated, coagulated, and/or necrosed, while heating of tissue outside of the lines will be minimized.

By energizing the electrode members at opposite polarities using a high frequency energy source, tissue between the jaws will be heated, coagulated, and/or necrosed, while heating of tissue outside of the lines will be minimized.

Bipolar surgical instruments having focused electrical fields

Patent number: 6162220
Abstract: A bipolar surgical device includes a pair of actuable jaws.

Methods and systems for organ resection

Patent number: 6123701
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for necrosing and resecting tissue. A pair of electrodes are placed on opposed tissue surfaces, and radio frequency power is applied through the electrodes to necrose a tissue mass therebetween. After necrosis has been effected, the tissue may be resected along a plane within the necrosed region with minimum or no bleeding. The tissue mass may then be removed.
