Fibroids (Leiomyomas)

Drs. Nezhat have been in the forefront of laparoscopic management of myomas, having introduced the technique of laparoscopically assisted myomectomy. They have treated thousands of patients with fibroids using different methods. Women with myomas who intend to conserve their reproductive organs come to the Drs. Nezhat from all over the globe.

Uterine fibroids are single or multiple growths of the muscle of the uterus. Their location and size can vary to a great degree. Based on the location, fibroids are defined as submucosal (just under the lining of the cavity inside the uterus), intramural (within the muscle of the uterus), subserosal (under the outer layer covering the uterus—the serosa), pendaculated (with a thin stalk at their base), and/or intraligamentous (within the ligaments that surround the uterus).

Fibroids are the most common type of non-cancerous tumors of the reproductive system. An estimated 40-50% of women will have fibroids by the age of 50. Since not all fibroids cause symptoms, not all fibroids will be diagnosed. The chance that fibroids may become cancerous is rare, approximately 1 in every 1000 cases.

Fibroids can cause many symptoms, including pressure-type symptoms (urinary frequency, constipation, bloating), pelvic/back pain, and heavy and/or irregular bleeding.

A variety of conservative treatments for uterine fibroids are available for our patients, all with good to excellent results.

After proper evaluation, we propose a plan and tailor the treatment to the individual's particular circumstances: general health condition, lifestyle, severity of symptoms, desire for future childbearing, and absence of absolute indications to remove the whole uterus (such as co-existing cancer and life-threatening vaginal hemorrhage).
